126th Post - Busy Novembers

 Monday Competition:

Three more competition days after this available before Christmas.  Today the 4th Dec. was dry but very cold with all players well wrapped up against the elements.  Fifteen players again today 3 x 5 with the triples playing two boules each.  Don't know if they'd play in these condition on the MED.!!

Some great play despite the cold but 13s were hard to come by.  Ciarán ruling the roost still.

Clustering.............

Planting Days:

Fingal offered us 100 Polyanthus but as we had no flower area we created two beds, courtesy of Tom Buckley, and Sean, James, Jim, Tom B and Tom D planted the beds, at the Fingal designated locations, with topsoil supplied by Fingal Operations.  Having spoken with Fingal, their plan is not to provide further annual plants but rather to supply perennials for 2024, which won't be as costly; will require less maintenance and will be more biodiverse and sustainable going forward.  Suits us also.

With the sods we removed we filled the water-filled hole along the Activity Trail that has existed for ages.  Parents and grandparents have complained that their charges clothes were regularly being destroyed with the muck.

Boules Extension Update:

All our local Fingal Councillors supported the proposed installation of a further two pistes in Alden Park.  The budget for the installation in the 1st half of 2024 was agreed recently at Fingal Co.Co. and the decision conveyed to us by Aoibhinn Tormey and Joan Hopkins.
The foreperson in Fingal Operations has asked that, within reason, we prepare a draft of what and where we want the pistes and ancillary furniture, path, signs etc.  We will prepare that over the holiday period.

Hi Tom, Motion was just agreed at the area meeting for 2 boules pistes. These will be installed as part of programme of works in 2024. I have asked for a site assessment to see if we can do more and will let you know the update on this. Kind regards, Local Councillors

Met the Fingal Co. Co. operatives today in Swords council offices with the Bayside Community Association and Ted Lynch, head of Howth/Malahide Operations, our district, has intimated that work, barring any issues, could start in March/April 2014.

Planning for 2024:

Following the last committee meeting we are in the process of growing and developing Bayside Boules:
  • Having a realistic Annual Sub. to cover IPA Insurance, Maintenance and associated running costs.
  • Developing Bayside Boules governance structures.
  • Welcoming the new pistes and engaging with Fingal in their regard.
  • Offering Competition to all those who wish to play competitively.
  • Continuing the singles and doubles Matchplay option for all interested players in 2024.
  • Continuing to have timetabled social boules on weekdays and Friday Night, in summer.
  • Engaging with other Boules Groups when we have 6 pistes e.g. Cavan, Malahide, Cabinteely.
  • Creating a broader Social Media presence.
  • Developing a Calendar of events and publishing it to our media.
  • A 'NEW' away event similar to Cavan in 2023.
  • Encouraging interested parties to engage with IPA events and National Competitions.
  • Coaching development.  Regular dedicated practice hour e.g. Shooting or Lobbing etc.
  • Advertising our existence better in the local community.
  • Running a local 'Business Houses Event' and possibly garner sponsorship.
  • Engaging more with the school/teachers to grow the game among the parents/grandparents also.
  • Bastille Day Boules in mid July.
  • Mike Deegan Memorial Trophy event probably in August.
  • Developing some Bayside Boules clothing with Logo for sale.
  • Create an  Outreach component in BB to support new Boules/Petanque start-ups nearby.
