151st Post: Hard to dampen the spirits

Rain..Rain...go to Spain: Despite the well more than average rainfall play continued most days.  Players kitted themselves for the expected weather and enjoyed the fresh air, the breeze and the camraderie despite the vagaries of the weather.  The inclement weather has caused the cancellation of a couple of TY monday mornings, unfortunately. The posters says Feb 8th but the weather caused the event to be moved on a week to the 15th. The Eight Irish Teams play against teams from Wales and Scotland in the competition and our generous collection of €280 will help to defray some of their costs.  Tom presented th funraising collection to the President of the IPA, Randeaa 'Papo' Nundram at the IPA AGM on Sat 28th  Feb.  They were very appreciative of our thoughtful gesture. Hardy Guys n Gals: Saturday January 3rd and the pistes filled up with eager beavers bouling and snacking the morning away.  Not quite Meditterranean conditions but all enjoyed the opening salvos of 2026. Defibrillator Installation: 16-01-26 Following a near year-long project involving grant applications, permission from the school Board of Management and sourcing an electrical installer the Defibrillator was finally unveiled on the rear wall of the school, adjacent to Alden Park. Happy Christmas and Health and Happiness for 2026   December was its usual quiet self with competition and play winding down.  The final reckoning for the Saturday Competition took place on Saturday 20th December where the top eight players played in a random doubles pairing with the winners progressing to the semis where another random pairing occurred.  The final was contested by the winning pair. Pat Ryan and Larry Breheny beat Dirk Starz and Nigel O'Mahony in one quarter final and Joan Maher and Vivienne O'Mahony defeated Hamed Sako and Michael Dolan in the other.  The Semi Final pairings led to Joan and Larry defeating Pat and Vivienne.  The final singles pairing were Joan versus Larry. Larry managed a victory over Joan who had played commendably well throughout the competition.   Congratulations to Larry. Our thanks to all the participants throughout the season and the valiant souls who braved the elements to spectate or officiate for the finals....

If the weather is not entirely off-putting there are many willing players ready to prove their progress. The Saturday Competition mornings are generally the best attended averaging 24 on most occasions.  We are gradually getting adjusted to the new scoring system.   Sat. 8th Sat. 8th Sat. 8th Monday 10th Monday 17th. Thursday 20th Defibrillator Update:     We are just awaiting on an electrician to install the Defibrillator on the school wall at the rear entrance to the school opposite the BBC play area in Alden Park.
