137th Post: Cavan Pétanque Club visit to Bayside Boules Club

BBC  v  CPC Sunday 3rd November in Alden Park:

The outstanding rematch between Cavan and Bayside took place in murky but dry weather in Alden Park yesterday.  Cavan originally expected to have 18 players but their numbers fell to 13 on the day.  Bayside had 27 players on our list and that dwindled also, but able replacements showed up on the day.

CPC were treated to refreshments in the BCC and greeted by Eileen D, Eileen O'B, Mary G, Agnes G and Kathryn O'D from the BBC.  They were able to have tea/coffee and sandwiches and use the facilities before decanting to Alden Park.  Our thanks to the ladies who did the 'meet and greet'.  The sandwiches were provided by Perfect Day Café courtesy of the €5 collected from each BBC player on the day.

They arrived well before the scheduled time and were at Alden shortly after noon.  They practiced for a half hour and then we commenced play with the BBC teams being rejigged due to the earlier start.  The Cavan Triples stayed on their nominated piste for the 5 rounds of 35 min. games.  The BBC teams rotated.  The accumulated teams scores produced the winner.  On this occasion CPC won by a margin of 43 points over the 25 games with a potential of 325 points available.

They were missing Naim, Ali and Robbie who would have strengthened their squad but we were missing Nigel, Larry and Hamed who would have bolstered our 'Shooting' capacity.  It was a lovely day of friendly rivalry played in wonderful spirit.  Billy Gleadell [ President of the IPA and Captain of CPC] sacrificed himself  on Team 3 where, for all five games, he played with a different pair of Bayside players each game.  To be fair they tried their best for Cavan and Maureen D almost became an honorary Cavan citizen due to her efforts!

There were over 40 players in total playing on our 6 piste facility with Piste F lying idle for practice.  Overall the day was a great success with CPC complimentary of the facility and the camaraderie.

Tom D presented Billy and Sylver with presentation packs of locally-brewed, HOPE craft beers, not as a prize, but thanking them for their work for this event and also their contribution to the development of Boules/Pétanque on the island.

Our thanks to the crew who did maintenance earlier in the week: James R, Jim D, Charlie O'D, Mairead S, Seán J and Tom D.  Also, thanks to those who set up the pistes on the morning and the gazebo.

Midweek Boules:

Great activity most mornings of the week considering the time of the year. The weather has been kind so far...long may it last.

Monday Boules:

Monday Competition is moving along smartly with numbers c. 20 most days.  We have tidied up the late arrivals and players now know that if they arrive after play has started that they will sit out the first game.  That is only fair to the members who have spent 15 minutes or more sorting out the pistes and putting out the equipment before the 10 a.m. start.

Saturday Morning Boules:

Play starts at 11 a.m. but we are going to try to continue the half hour shooting opportunity in advance with Tom B's apparatus available to support the skill development.  Hopefully, later in the year we might get some of the 'Night Players' to support our 'Shooting' development.

Backyard Boules:

When you have your own private piste...then you have no excuses!!  Our car but not our house!!

Halloween:
Halloween passed off without much damage or interference to the Park.  There were just two incidents that we sorted before it gained much traction or negative attention.  Thanks to Charlie and James for their support.
