2022 Q1 Singles Matchplay Finals
Congratulations to all the participants and particularly the finalists in the three tier finals that were postponed from last Sunday but played in lovely weather conditions today.
Tier 3: Ann Wilson v Sean Jenkins Winner: Ann
Tier 2: Denis Breheny v Tom Buckley Winner: Tom
Tier 1: Chris Grehan v Shay Coyne Winner: Shay
Congratulations to Shay, the Perpetual Trophy Winner for Q1 Single Matchplay 2022.
Shay had to weather the early lead garnered by Chris to gradually ease himself past the post in a very tight contest.
All the fine efforts in each final were applauded by the enthralled spectators.
Thanks to Ciaran for organising the prizes and presenting them to the winners along with generating the software and Apps to permit the smooth running of the competition.
Our thanks to all the competitors for keeping the Matchplay App free of all texts bar the fixtures and results. It makes the job of collating the data much simpler when you don't have to trawl through jokes and memes, enjoyable as they might be in other settings!
Some photos of the gathered vanquished and visitors who were well entertained by the six finalists.
Group A Monday Competition:
With Week 5 due tomorrow, weather permitting, the standings currently have been provided by Ciaran. Eileen, Ciaran and Larry currently top the listings....all to play for!
Doubles competition at Park Petanque Sat. 7th May 2022.
Ciaran, Eileen and Tom D tested their skills against some of the best players in Ireland currently. Some of the competitors have recently represented Ireland at the Celtic Challenge Competition in Glasgow.
Ciaran partnered Yaness and they just missed out on qualification for the semi-finals. Eileen and Tom acquitted themselves well without winning any game.
It was a long day but the weather conditions were favourable and the competition was friendly while challenging. The skill of 'shooting' was the major difference between those who were successful and the lesser lights.
The final pitted two doubles pairings who were undoubtedly the prime contenders. They served up a feast of quality play. We should invite them to Alden a a convenient time to play a demonstration game or visit Bushy Park, Terenure to see them play on home turf.
Some photos from Bushy Park:
Ciaran has some video of the final that we will post later after editing.
CELTIC CHALLENGE 2022
The much delayed 2020 Celtic Challenge finally took place in Glasgow on the May Day bank holiday weekend.
Saturday's play saw the teams battling rain and wind but, as our photo of the Ireland team shows, the sun did come out for some of the time.
The Ireland team, a mixture of experienced and novice internationals, had a poor start on the Saturday but rallied on the Sunday gaining 15 of their total of 24 wins on the day. A better start might have seen them overhaul the hosts who just pipped Ireland to second place with 25 wins in total.
Wales however were the dominant team of the weekend winning a total of 33 of the games they played = congratulations to the men and women of Cymru who put an end to Scotland’s run of success in the competition.
Lets hope for a better result for Ireland when the competition returns to the Emerald Isle in 2023
