B.B.C. welcomes Triplets!

2022     I.P.A. Triples Competition.

Eileen, Tom and Ciaran took a chance at the National Triples competition last Saturday 23rd April at Bushy Park, Terenure.  It was a whole day affair.  We travelled to be on site for 9.00 a.m. so we could get parked up and try out the surface.  Play started shortly after 10.15 a.m.  There were thirteen teams of three making thirty-nine competitors in total with some spectators.

The recently established County Cavan Petanque Club based at the old Belturbet Railway Station sent three teams to see how they would fare in national competition, like ourselves.  They were fully kitted out in sponsored clothing and definitely won the best dressed competitors virtual award.

Our only victory was against one of their teams.  We lost the three other fixtures but our claim to fame was that we lost to the eventual winners by the closest margin.  In fact, we performed reasonably well against both the finalists.  We met them both in our group.  The skill of 'shooting' was the defining difference between ourselves and the other teams.

Tactics; boule and jack marking; ground repair and dovetailing different skills within the team were factors also.

There are definitely players in B.B.C. who would be competitive in this arena and we discovered that we were by no means disgraced in defeat and the majority of the participants were friendly and welcoming and happy to see the game progressing.

There is an Open Doubles Competition on Sat. May 7th organised by Park Petanque where you just pay the €5 and enter by next weekend.  It is not an I.P.A. event and can be entered by an pair of players.  Contact Tom or Ciaran, if interested!

The 1st Quarter Singles Matchplay Competition:

Tier 1:

Tier 3:

Tier 2

The state of play so far.  Ideally the three tier finals would be played this Saturday subject to players being available.  In Tier 2 Michael was unfortunately unable to fulfil his quarter final so Eileen D is due to play Tom B in the semi-final.  The matches are attracting interested spectators and one game knockout is proving a tricky assignment.  The forecast for this week is kind so hopefully we'll get all fixtures played.

Group A Monday Competition:

The table after the second week of play.   Some players have yet to start but hopefully they'll be underway tomorrow morning.

N.B.    Short B.B.C. Cmtee Meeting after play tomorrow morning c. 12.15 a.m.

Gentle Rules Reminder:

Both feet must be fully inside the throwing circle.  Standing on the circle is not permitted.
