94th Post... The Perfect Score

A little birdy told me this boules lark is a hoot!

It was a mixed week weather-wise but that familiar thud of steel boule on jagged stone was heard around Alden Park each and every day as players continue to enjoy our not-so-new favourite pastime.

As Sod's Law would have it, my mention last week of a relatively clean and low maintenance boules area was immediately undermined as empty cans and bottles of wine (Châteauneuf-du-Pape, presumably!) made an appearance one morning. We thank Sean for the unprompted clean up and a scrub down of the benches. It's good news for Tom D though as this turn of events has eliminated him as a suspect...

Group A League Competition

We had twelve players on Monday which, like any multiple of 4, was warmly welcomed by those playing. We split into three random doubles matches and rotated twice more during a rip-roaring session. Ten players scored at least one 13 on the day which is great to see. The week belonged to Champagne Charlie though as he vaulted (hehe!) to the top of our leaderboard with a perfect 39 points. Sean is a single point behind with Ciaran a further three points adrift. Looking at the graphic in a little more detail, we can see that the highest number of 13s to date is 5 and that no less than five players are level on this facet! I'm happy to say that this type of statistic bodes well for a close competition. Full league table follows below:

No boule in front of the coch = lots of points for the opposition!

Open Play and a Triples Treat

Apologies to the Tuesday and Thursday players this week as I wasn't in a position to venture out and snap some photos - I promise I'll catch up with you soon!

I did however manage a rare bit of Wednesday play. We had six players and opted for a Triples match so two boules each rather than the usually preferred three. It's a different dynamic again but it proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable session.

There was some discussion afterwards about the possibility of a triples event over a half-day (or maybe two consecutive half-days). Assuming there's enough interest, it's certainly something we could organise. I'll add it to the agenda for discussion at the next Committee meeting.

A couple of photos from Wednesday:

It's a shooting gallery...

Unfortunately for Larry, the target is not destroyed!

Doubles Match Play

Just posting a quick note to say this hasn't been forgotten and it will definitely run and be completed in Q4. More anon!

  1. Great record Ciaran for those away. For the record I'm more if a Pomerol man myself...so on two counts it wasn't me!!
