61st Post .... Matchplay in the mix.....
Thankfully we have not gone to Level 4 or Level 5 restrictions so we continue to play with masks and social distancing on the Mon., Wed. and Sat mornings as per photos below.
Group B are up and running with at least eight players each play day. Ciaran and Michael joined them on a beautiful, sunny Wednesday morning. They arrive at 11.30 to start play at 11.45 and finish by 1.15 p.m. As they get more established they will organise the purchase and storage of their own set of equipment. We have applied for a small grant for start-up equipment...fingers crossed, but each group will need to be financially self sufficient. Hopefully the Matchplay Competitions will be the main cross-over point between the two Groups A and B.
The Matchplay has been very successful, especially in these Covid times. The knockout nature of this Competition means it will be completed quickly, playing in small games at Casual Play times and we may revise the nature of the competition for subsequent competitions.
Only four below are playing in the competition. The others are socially distanced spectators with masks. This has added a great dimension with people recognising quality play and strategic reasoning in pursuit of a victory. Both the winners and runners-up are gracious and grateful for the opportunity to play.
We were treated to more graffiti on one of the benches on Monday last. Luckily, on this occasion, we caught them red-handed. They are lads in the 14 to 17 age bracket. There were three of us playing boules and we sternly admonished them for defacing public property. They weren't very apologetic and one boy, in particular, was cheeky and very defensive when challenged. We gave them the opportunity to come down at 6 p.m. the following evening [ Tuesday ] to sand down and repaint the surface. They didn't arrive but we repaired the damage again, ourselves. I have a photo of the culprits, who would be identifiable, despite facing away and putting up their hoodies. If we find they continue to deface our public property we can let their parents/grandparents have the photo, in the first instance.
Following repairs and repainting......
