82nd Post.....down at the Business End.

We've arrived at the business end of the two month long BBC  Singles Matchplay Competition.  From the table below,, and the Quarter Final Bracket below that, you can the the cream of the crop.  Unfortunately Brian was unable to finish out the competition so his 4th place in Group 1 went to the next best-placed player Vivienne.

The remaining fixtures will be played over this week with the Final on Sunday 4th July, weather permitting.  We expect a good deal of interest in these fixtures so spectators are asked to continue to socially distance, unless in a bubble.  Bring a chair if needed as the benches won't accommodate all-comers.   The Gov. Guideline issued today, Tuesday 29/06/21 do not preclude outdoor gathering but anyone not doubly vaccinated or very recently doubly vaccinated might consider wearing a mask when in close proximity to other players especially on account of the Delta variant.

Ciarán presented Nigel, belatedly, with the Singles Matchplay Trophy, he previously won but was not presented.  He will be the proud possessor of the trophy for a week and he will present it to the winner of this competition next Sunday, all going well.  The photo below provides context for viewers in the future!

The photos below were taken by Nigel today, Tuesday, of two of the Quarter Finals.  Sean managed to beat  Shay and Denis had a marginal victory over Vivienne.

The following photos are a mixture of casual players and games leading up the the top eight in Gorup 1 and Group 2.

Hiding in plain view......a very interested spectator....... despite the shades we'd hazard a guess!

Following a BBC  Committee meeting last Sunday we agreed to restart the the old, pre-covid Group A and B competitions from  Monday 12th July.

The next Matchplay Competition ,that Ciaran has agreed to run, will be a Doubles Matchplay.  Ciaran will use the rankings from the current Singles Competition  to rate the individuals.  With that taken into account, for those interested, he will create partners to play in the Doubles Matchplay with attention to fairness.  This will run concurrently with the ordinary Group play.

Over the Summer the school slot will not be used by the school so those slots are  available until September.

There is, as yet,  no Group C or Group D so those slots may be available for casual or competitive play.

In the week July 5th to July 12th  the Training Gear will be shown and demonstrated on a designated evening to any interested parties.  Date to be advised.  The information imparted by Owen Kelleher from the Irish Petanque Association  will be gone through by Committee members who were present. that evening.

We hope to have a French National Holiday Event [ Bastille Day] on Wed. July 14th.  As with last year we will put up some decorations; have a mix of fun play and casual play; have a playlist of 'French' tunes; and players will have to bring their own food and drinks as sharing will not be  an option with Covid restrictions.  Distancing will probably be a feature still and those wishing to wear a mask will not be made feel awkward.  Most are doubly vaccinated but we'll be guided by public health advice.

A couple of photos from last year 2020.......................................

Over the next couple of weeks you will see some activity south of the Boules Area as the Art Installation gets underway.  We may need occasional Labour Support for the artist /sculptor, Eoghain Phelan, for willing volunteers.  To be advised.
