141st Post: BBC goes Marching On....
Monday Competition:
With two weeks of Competition remaining very little separates the top three. Chris is in pole position with Sean J and John O'C in close pursuit. Maureen Deane is the top lady at present. By the time you're reading this the penultimate round will have been played and things might have changed. All to play for.
Maintenance Work:
On account of the unseasonably nice weather we decided to treat the surroundings and display panel with wood preserving stain.
A bulletin went out and over three afternoons the boundaries, display board, flower beds and benches got treated and even labelled. The crew are in the following photos. Many thanks to all involved especially James, whose persistence paid off!. The place looks great for ourselves and visitors.
With late notice, a group of ladies from BBC, accompanied by Tom D made a day trip to Galway City, by train, to demonstrate the game to Galwegians and visitors on the famed Eyre Sq.
They represented the IPA and BBC demonstrating the basics of the game to passers-by. Unfortunately, it was held on the grass of the hallowed square but all enjoyed the occasion.
A couple living in Galway, Chris and Mary McMullin, joined Eileen, Sharyon, Elizabeth and Irene in the event. Great feedback from the public and Galway City officers.
We collected signatures petitioning the 'powers that be' to install a Terrain in the city and perhaps the county.
The weather has been very kind most of March and most days had a good number of members playing in the mornings.

Women in Sport [ Fingal ]:
We had a very successful Sunday Event introducing ladies to the sport. The afternoon was lovely and the crew greatly enjoyed the exposure to this new game. One young lady, heavily pregnant, played for the entire two hours and gave birth the following week!
The BBC support for the event was great: Eileen D, Irene, Agnes, Maureen, Joan and Patricia showed them the ropes. Some boyfriends attended and they were entertained by Tom B, Tom D.
Seapoint Triples:
Nine brave souls from BBC made the fixture v Seapoint Pétanque Club on Thursday 13th March. In cool conditions we played a very competent Seapoint team. They won the fixture by 5 games to 4. Our triples, travelers were: Gerry L, Tom D, Maureen D: Nigel, Terry, Ciarán, Sharyon, John O'C and Michael D. They were a friendly but competitive opponent. They play on a small Terrain close by Seapoint Rugby Club. The had three narrow pistes marked out with string. We hope to have a return fixture later in the year.
Laura Lynn Charity Day in Cabinteely on Sat. March 1st:
Two Triples Teams supported a charity event at Cabinteely Pétanque Club. Some non-playing members even contributed to the charity on the day. It was very well organised on a newly refurbished but treacherous terrain. We failed to come to terms with the surface and we didn't feature in the final groups. However we greatly enjoyed the day. Dirk, Sharyon, Eileen, Terry, Jim and Tom D. represented the BBC.
St Fintan's TY project:
The St Fintan's pupils accompanied by a teacher continue to enjoy their introduction to the sport. The last two weeks they had 14 players on the Friday afternoons.
Thanks to the TY Support Group who, in Tom D's absence will continue the programme. It is hoped that BBC will sponsor a prize for a final event in early May before their exams.
