145th Post: July happenings

Seapoint visit to Alden:

We welcomed Seapoint Pétanque to Alden Park on Wed July 2nd.  We had a great morning's play in lovely weather. We played all doubles fixtures and eventually BBC managed to win overall - cumulative score 169 v 154 while the head to heads were a draw at 9 wins apiece. We were impressed by their 'uniform' appearance which is our goal shortly.

Bastille Day:

We had our annual Bastille Day Fun and Games on Sunday 13th this year. The weather obliged and we had a very enjoyable afternoon. We had a variety of winners over the 6 disciplines. The players all wore some Red and Blue articles with the French theme on the day.

Calendar of upcoming events:

We have the IPA Doubles on Sunday Aug 3rd to look forward to.  Dirk will represent BBC at the IPA Precision Shooting.  We are endeavouring to get a team of four willing to travel to cork for the Celtic Challenge Qualifiers.  Team has to be entered before Sat 9th August.  The Celtic Challenge will be held in Cork in 2026.  Ireland will have eight teams as the host nation

Men's Shed + Visitors:

Larry has invited some of the Baldoyle Men's Shed group to play on Wednesdays.

Colm, formerly of St Anne's Park, arrives on Tuesday nights with family and  his relation, Alan, at our request, took some aerial photographs of the pistes which he will forward shortly.

Great to see the pistes being used by the general public.

IPA Ladies Doubles:

We had three pairs of ladies representing the club at the IPA Ladies Doubles in Marlay Park on Sunday July 27th.  Thankfully the weather was kind and of the ten teams present BBC had three of the teams.  Sharyon and Terry; Eileen D and Mary G; Agnes and Brigid.  Brigid thankfully replaced Maureen who had an unfortunate injury and couldn't play on the day.  All our teams acquitted themselves well and Eileen and Mary were just pipped in the semi-final by a single point.  More than anything else the exercise proved that our ladies are a match for any ladies playing in the country.  Our thanks to Gertie who made the long trip to Marlay for the day in support of the ladies.

Our Malahide visit:

We travelled to Malahide Castle Boules on Tuesday 29th July.  Again we were blessed with the weather. We had a lovely morning of doubles and Aubrey Woolfson [Malahide] fed all and sundry as well as playing with Gerry Lloyd on the day.  The games were played in a great spirit and undoubtedly Malahide have improved enormously since our last game.  They won the fixture both in cumulative points and straight head to head wins.  We invited them to call to Alden Park on Sunday 3rd August when we host the IPA Doubles so they can see the standard of play at national level and perhaps encourage them to join the IPA!

New Gear:

We are progressing with the gear order and we had the final fittings at the Bayside Community Centre.  The order has gone to O'Neills and production should start soon enough.

Grant aid:

We recently received grants via Fingal Local Enhancement Programme from the Irish Department of Rural and Community Development.  They were very specific for eligible items and you applied and received a portion of your application, if successful.

We should have our own Gazebo; a pair of advertising Fly Flags; a Precision Shooting Mat and most importantly a Defibrillator located nearby for our use and the local and school community. We hope to have all by end August.

NB: We will be looking for local members who would be willing to store some of the items at their premises as Fingal, at this time, will not provide a storage unit in the Park.  Tom and Ciarán are storing most of the gear currently.

Her Outdoors:

We plan to have another introductory session for females on Sunday 17th August in the afternoon.  If you, or anyone you know would like to play and help introduce the game please put the afternoon in your diary.  Focused on the Ladies in the club and community.  Advertised on Social Media and in the Bayside Community Centre.  A  national effort......
